A Histochemical Study of the Uterine Carcinoma

Abstract
In this study the author observed phosphorylase activity of exfoliated cells of the vagina and the uterine cervix and endometrial tissues histochemically with Takeuchi¢¥s methods. The author examined 35 biopsy specimens obtained from the cervix and endometrium, and 32 vaginal smears.
The results thus obtained were discussed and summarized as follows.
1. In the cervical carcinoma and ejometrial adenocarcinoma the phosphorylase activity of the cancer cells was moderately to strongly positive.
2. In the benign epithelium such as chronic cervicitis and endometrial hyperplasia, the phosphorylase activity of the surface and gladular epithelium was negative.
3. The phosphorylase activity of the exfoliated cells was negative in the vaginal smears which were cytologycally diagnosed as class I and Il , and moderately to strongly positive in which cytologically diagnosed as class IV and % .
4. In the vaginal smears which were cytologically diagnosed as class 1, the phosphorylase activity of the exfoleated cells showed mildly to moderately positive in some cases, but in other cases was negative.
On the basis of the above findings, the author suggested that the histochemical observation of phospho¡©rylase activity of vaginal exfoliated cells and biopsied tissues of the uterus might be helpful in the diagno¡©sis of the uterine carcinoma.
